Planned by the New York Six Associate Deans, the 2019 New Department Chairs Leadership Development Retreat was offered at the Minnowbrook Conference Center in Blue Mountain Lake, NY. The goal of the retreat was for participants to work collaboratively with other department chairs to develop the skills to lead and influence as a department chair.
Participants included new department chairs, experienced faculty, and administrators. Experienced faculty and administrators served as session panelists and informal mentors for the new department chairs. Faculty from all six institutions attended.
The most useful part of the retreat was thinking about how to systematically manage complex tasks that require other people to cooperate. I ran a tenure-steam search this semester and used many of the organizational and interpersonal skills that I learned at the retreat.
I greatly appreciated the retreat and will be recommending it to other rising chairs who have the opportunity to participate.
